Abstract
Yasnaya Polyana, the family estate and literary home of Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy, occupies an important place in the history of Russian literature. During the Second World War, particularly in the autumn and winter of 1941, the estate faced serious threats to its historic buildings, memorial objects, and documentary collections. This article examines the measures taken to protect Tolstoy’s material heritage during the war, the consequences of the German occupation, and the subsequent restoration of the museum complex. Drawing on historical materials and information published by the Yasnaya Polyana Museum, the study focuses on three interconnected processes: the evacuation of 110 crates of museum objects and documents to Tomsk, the damage sustained by the estate during the occupation, and the restoration work undertaken after the withdrawal of German forces. It also considers the transformation of Yasnaya Polyana from a family estate into a national cultural institution and explores its significance as a site of cultural memory. The study argues that the preservation of Yasnaya Polyana involved more than saving a historic building. It required the protection of personal belongings, books, artworks, and documentary evidence associated with Tolstoy’s life and literary work, as well as the restoration of their relationship with the original historical environment. The estate’s wartime experience demonstrates the importance of preventive evacuation, documentation, institutional cooperation, and evidence-based restoration in safeguarding literary heritage during armed conflict.
