Abstract

Mikhail Sholokhov (1905–1984), the great Russian writer and Nobel Prize laureate in Literature, presents a realistic and deeply moving portrayal of the disintegration of Don Cossack families during the Russian Civil War of 1917–1922 in his collection Don Stories (1926). The main question addressed in the present article is how the revolutionary upheavals and the Civil War disrupted the patriarchal structure of Cossack families and drew members of the same family onto opposing Red and White fronts. The study employs a descriptive-analytical method based on content analysis of the stories within their historical and social context. The findings indicate that Sholokhov depicts two contrasting destinies in two groups of stories: stories in which lofty human emotions—self-sacrifice, forgiveness, and love for one’s fellow human beings—flourish at the height of crisis, and stories in which hatred, resentment, and fanaticism lead to the killing of sons, fathers, and brothers. The study concludes that the family in Don Stories is not merely a social unit but also a reflection of the fate of the Russian people amid a historical crisis. Through detailed and particularized depiction, Sholokhov moves toward a broader and more universal representation; by narrating individual destinies, he reflects the destiny of the nation as a whole.
